Supporting Siblings
Through a Love for Groups
Hello, I’m Erica Billings—and I believe therapy is at its best when it feels alive.
Group therapy has a way of waking us up to ourselves and to each other. It helps us notice what we’re feeling both within ourselves, and toward someone else—and gives us a space to voice it in the moment, where real change can happen.
In graduate school, I experienced my first process group—a space where a few brave people and a therapist explore what is happening between them, in the room, in real time. Unspoken feelings surfaced, old patterns came into focus, and moments of deep clarity and connection took root. I could feel the room come alive—and something in me did too. That’s when I knew I wanted to build my life’s work around group work.
Over time, I discovered that the sibling group, our earliest peer group, holds some of the deepest potential for growth. Therapy with your sibling can reach far beyond the sibling relationship—it can reshape how you relate in every part of your life.
Siblings are a Special Group
You and your siblings make up a very important subgroup within your First Group (your family of origin or nuclear family). Your relationship with your sibling is probably the longest and most enduring connection you will have throughout your life. Siblings are there long before partners, kids, and best friends, and long after parents. The patterns we learn with our siblings—about competition, care, boundaries, or being seen—often echo in friendships, partnerships, parenting, and work. This makes siblings an invaluable (and often untapped) resource for growth and development.
My love for group therapy naturally led me to sibling therapy and advanced training with Dr. Karen Gail Lewis. Siblings are often overlooked in therapy, but even business partners do therapy together. So why not siblings?
